Compliment your medical pursuits with a cultural exploration into medicine and illness.
If you plan to pursue a career in the medical field, Elmira College’s Medical Humanities minor will round out your education and make you a better candidate for employment or graduate studies. You’ll go beyond the medical sciences and explore how a person’s health is influenced by their personal and cultural experiences.
Through an interdisciplinary approach, you’ll learn how wellness is intricately connected with identity, community, spirituality, ethics, language, culture, technology, the arts, and history. You’ll develop an understanding in focus areas such as how human identity and experience shape illness, the impact of cultural perspectives on physical and mental health, concepts and representations of the human body, the ethical and spiritual dimensions of medical knowledge and practice, and the social, historical, and political perspectives related to medicine.
Knowledge in Medical Humanities will help you become a more compassionate healthcare professional equipped with the critical thinking skills needed to address current medical needs. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor and Statistics, healthcare professions are expected to grow by 13% within the next 10 years, which equals the addition of around 2 million new jobs nationwide. This job growth is much faster than the bureau’s average for all other occupations.
